Hazelton
is a small community located in Preston County in the northeast corner of West Virginia. It's located along Interstate 69 east of Bruceton Mills. As part of Preston County, Hazelton is part of a rugged land of farming, mining and timbering, yet it remains one of the most scenic areas of the state. Mostly settled in the 18th century, many historic structures remain in the area, such as the Old Stone Tavern in Aurora to the Civil War era architecture of Kingwood. Visitors will find grist mills (some of them still in operation) and maple sugar camps, along with museums displaying historical artifacts of the area. There are also many opportunities for outdoor recreation near Hazelton. Preston County includes the tip of the Monongahela National Forest and activities such as white water rafting, hiking, biking, alpine and cross-country skiing, hunting and fishing. The region is also home to several special events and small town fairs and festivals. Some of those that present the foods and crafts of rural Appalachia include the Buckwheat Festival, Heritage Days in Kingwood, Cheat River Festival in Albright, the New Deal Festival in Arthurdale and the Terra Alta Fourth of July Celebration.

Northeastern West Virginia has a four-season, mountainous climate. Due to its high elevation, this region has a somewhat cooler, moister climate than surrounding areas at lower altitudes. Summers are mild and humid with high temperatures ranging from the 60s to low 70s F. Summer low temperatures average 50-55 F, although temperatures below freezing have been recorded in every month of the year. Winters are typically cold and snowy. The elevation allows it to receive significant upslope snow, particularly during prolonged periods of northwesterly winds coming off the Great Lakes. Located along the spine of the central Appalachian Mountains, this region is often near the southwestern extreme of Nor'easters, getting significant snowfall from strong, Atlantic moisture-laden, easterly winds. Annual snowfall averages 160 inches. Nearly all snow falls from October through April.
