Canaan-Valley
is located in Tucker County in northeastern West Virginia. The valley was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1974. Within Canaan Valley are extensive wetlands and the headwaters of the Blackwater River, which spills out of the valley at Blackwater Falls. A scenic tourist destination, Canaan Valley is associated with the Canaan Valley Resort State Park and the Blackwater Falls State Park. The valley is nestled among the higher ranges of the Allegheny Mountains, and is about 13 miles long and three to five miles wide, and encompasses about 25,000 acres. Since 1994, about 60 percent of the valley has become the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge. The valleys unique climate and natural features attract lots of outdoor enthusiasts. Camping, hiking, trout and bass fishing, mountain biking, geocaching, leaf-peeping, picnicking and wildlife viewing are popular summertime outdoor activities. Upland game bird hunting for woodcock, ruffled grouse, common snipe and wild turkey has long been popular in the valley and is still permitted in season, even in the National Wildlife Refuge. In addition to two state parks and one wildlife refuge, Canaan Valley is also home to two alpine ski resorts that offer alpine and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, tubing, snowshoeing, and ice skating. Whether for adventure and recreation or secluded relaxation, Canaan Valley offers four seasons of breathtaking scenery to enjoy.

Canaan Valley Weather & Climate

Northeastern West Virginia has a four-season, mountainous climate. Due to its high elevation, this region has a somewhat cooler, moister climate than surrounding areas at lower altitudes. Summers are mild and humid with high temperatures ranging from the 60s to low 70s F. Summer low temperatures average 50-55 F, although temperatures below freezing have been recorded in every month of the year. Winters are typically cold and snowy. The elevation allows it to receive significant upslope snow, particularly during prolonged periods of northwesterly winds coming off the Great Lakes. Located along the spine of the central Appalachian Mountains, this region is often near the southwestern extreme of Nor'easters, getting significant snowfall from strong, Atlantic moisture-laden, easterly winds. Annual snowfall averages 160 inches. Nearly all snow falls from October through April.
