Morgantown is located in Monongalia County in northern West Virginia near the Pennsylvania border. It's the largest city in North-Central West Virginia, with a population of approximately 30,000. However, the entire Morgantown metropolitan area has an estimated population of 118,506. The city of Morgantown is situated along the banks of the Monongahela River. It's known for being home to West Virginia University and the one-of-a-kind Morgantown Personal Rapid Transit System. It has been named one of the best small cities in the county for its education, world-class healthcare, recreation, art facilities and strong business community. The city of Morgantown was settled in 1772 and is made up of several different neighborhoods, each with a distinct history and personality. Several historic structures are in Morgantown, including the old Stone House, built prior to 1813, and the restored home built by John Rogers on Foundry Street in 1840. Morgantown has an excellent park system and is home to a newly developed Pedestrian Walking and Recreational Trails System. The city is also well known for its sporting events at Mountaineer Field or the Coliseum and great performing arts at the Creative Arts Center. Morgantown is also home to several annual festivals, including Art on the River in August and the Mountaineer Balloon Festival in October.

The average coolest month is January with an average low temperature of 21. Snowfall can occur anytime from late November to mid-April, with the most amounts falling during January and February. However, it is rare for a major snowstorm to hit this area. Rainfall is spread out fairly evenly over the entire year. Thunderstorms are frequent during the late spring and throughout the summer, and occasionally can be quite violent. Tornadoes are very rare in the state of West Virginia. The driest period tends to be during the autumn months of September and October. Spring is the most unpredictable season. It's not unusual in the springtime for a warm, sunny day to be followed immediately by a chilly, rainy day.
