Fairmont
is located in northeastern West Virginia in Marion County. Nicknamed "The Friendly City," the population of the town was 19,097 as of the 2000 census. It serves as the county seat for Marion County. Fairmont was established in 1820 as Middletown (then in Monongalia County.) In 1843, it was chartered by the Virginia General Assembly as Fairmont, a contraction of "Fair Mountain." The town of Fairmont is home to the Country Club Bakery, "The Home of the Original Pepperoni Roll." Several parks are located in the area, including Curtisville Lake, which offers 695 acres for hiking and picnicking around a scenic 30-acred lake. Also in Fairmont, the Hutchinson Park/Rail Trail Access is a four-acre park that offers a playground, baseball field and hiking. There are several rail/trails in the Fairmont area. The MCPARC offers two exceptional trails with many dramatic features. West Fork River (Ralph S. LaRue) Trail is 16 miles long with more than 200 acres of river front property. Enjoy biking, walking, horseback riding, fishing, and river access with put-in at trailheads. Several re-decked railroad bridges offer great views with one bridge over 500 feet in length. MCTRAIL offers nearly 3 miles and 36 acres of converted railway property for walkers, joggers and bikers.

Northern West Virginia has a four-season climate classified as humid continental. July is the average warmest month, with an average high temperature of 85. The average coolest month is January with an average low temperature of 21. Snowfall can occur anytime from late November to mid-April, with the most amounts falling during January and February. However, it is rare for a major snowstorm to hit this area. Rainfall is spread out fairly evenly over the entire year. Thunderstorms are frequent during the late spring and throughout the summer, and occasionally can be quite violent. Tornadoes are very rare in the state of West Virginia. The driest period tends to be during the autumn months of September and October. Spring is the most unpredictable season. It's not unusual in the springtime for a warm, sunny day to be followed immediately by a chilly, rainy day.
