Aurora is an unincorporated community in Preston County, West Virginia in the northeastern part of the state. Aurora was originally a German settlement called Salem and later, Mount Carmel. In the late 1880s the community became known as a resort town thanks to several large hotels which were built in the area. Some of these hotels featured casinos, pools, and concert halls. In the 1930s an artist colony formed in the nearby Youghiogheny Forest area. Aurora is located on U.S. Route 50 between the Maryland state line and the town of Rowlesburg. Cathedral State Park is located to the east of Auroras post office, and is home to the largest virgin timber tract remaining in the state of West Virginia. It is a mixed forest of predominantly eastern hemlock and has been designated a National Natural Landmark. Aurora, within Preston County, is situated at the tip of the Monongahela National Forest. The wild Cheat River flows through the middle of the county and rolling farmlands complete the picture that makes up this picturesque landscape. Some of the recreational activities available here include whitewater rafting, hiking, biking, golf, fishing and boating, cross-country skiing, and sledding. Aurora offers big-city amenities amid one of the most secluded and naturally beautiful areas in the nation.

Aurora Weather & Climate

Northeastern West Virginia has a four-season, mountainous climate. Due to its high elevation, this region has a somewhat cooler, moister climate than surrounding areas at lower altitudes. Summers are mild and humid with high temperatures ranging from the 60s to low 70s F. Summer low temperatures average 50-55 F, although temperatures below freezing have been recorded in every month of the year. Winters are typically cold and snowy. The elevation allows it to receive significant upslope snow, particularly during prolonged periods of northwesterly winds coming off the Great Lakes. Located along the spine of the central Appalachian Mountains, this region is often near the southwestern extreme of Nor'easters, getting significant snowfall from strong, Atlantic moisture-laden, easterly winds. Annual snowfall averages 160 inches. Nearly all snow falls from October through April.
