Grafton
is a small city located in Taylor County in northern West Virginia. Chartered in 1856, the town was named for John Grafton, a civil engineer for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The city of Grafton serves as the county seat and the population was 5,489 as of the 2000 census. Grafton is called "The Birthplace of Mother's Day," as the holiday was founded in the town on May 10, 1908. It's home to the International Mother's Day Shrine. The town of Grafton also boasts one of the oldest observances of Memorial Day in America with a parade every year since 1867. The only two national cemeteries in the state of West Virginia are also located in Grafton. Surrounded by lush rolling hills, historic landmarks and Tygart Lake and River, Grafton offers a rich history with modern conveniences and exciting recreational opportunities. Tygart Lake is a ten-mile long, 1,750-acre lake that offers fishing, boating, five hiking trails, camping, two gift shops and a restaurant that features delicious "down home" style cooking. During the summer, a park naturalist provides free guided nature programs and recreation activities for all guests. Other nearby attractions include a golf course, Pricketts Fort, Valley Falls, Philippi covered bridge and Fairmont State University. Valley Falls State Park features a spectacular series of falls, with a rock formation known as Connoquenessing Sandstone, that forms the cap of the falls over which the river plunges and swirls for over a mile down the narrow canyon floor.

Northern West Virginia has a four-season climate classified as humid continental. July is the average warmest month, with an average high temperature of 85. The average coolest month is January with an average low temperature of 21. Snowfall can occur anytime from late November to mid-April, with the most amounts falling during January and February. However, it is rare for a major snowstorm to hit this area. Rainfall is spread out fairly evenly over the entire year. Thunderstorms are frequent during the late spring and throughout the summer, and occasionally can be quite violent. Tornadoes are very rare in the state of West Virginia. The driest period tends to be during the autumn months of September and October. Spring is the most unpredictable season. It's not unusual in the springtime for a warm, sunny day to be followed immediately by a chilly, rainy day.
