Rough-Run
is a small community, or populated place, located high in the mountains of Grant County in northeast West Virginia. It is approximately 12 miles south of the town of Petersburg. This is the place to come if you're looking for rest and relaxation and "getting away from it all." With its spectacular mountain views and abundance of outdoor activities, it truly is a place many call "Almost Heaven." Rough Run, as part of Grant County, offers eight county parks. Just a few of the recreational activities available include horseback riding, canoeing and kayaking, rock climbing, fishing, boating, hiking, camping, golf and an array of winter sports. There are also caverns to explore and the surrounding mountains provide some of the most breathtaking fall foliage in the region. Nearby places to visit include Canaan Valley, Black Water Falls, Spruce Knob, Seneca Rocks and the Monongahela National Forest. Dolly Sods Wilderness Area is a portion of the Monongahela National Forest that boasts incredible scenery and challenging hiking trails. There is even a "Wave Camp" sponsored by a nearby soaring association for those who enjoy the sport of soaring. Rough Run is less than 3 hours from Washington D.C., Baltimore and Pittsburgh.

The northeastern panhandle region of West Virginia has a humid continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters. The climate of the eastern panhandle is influenced by its proximity to the Atlantic slope and is similar to that of nearby coastal areas. The yearly average temperature is 53F. Prevailing winds are from the south and west, and seldom reach hurricane or tornado force. Average annual precipitation is 44 inches and is slightly heavier on the western slopes of the Alleghenies. Accumulations of snow may vary from about 20 inches in the western sections to more than 50 inches in the higher mountains. Spring weather is unpredictable and the driest period tends to be during the autumn months of September and October.
