Hillsboro
is a small town of approximately 250 residents, located in Pocahontas County, West Virginia. For such a small community, this peaceful little village has a lot to offer visitors. First of all, the scenery is calm and serene, surrounded by lush green rolling hills and mountain vistas. Hillsboro is the birthplace of author Pearl S. Buck. Her home stands in loving memory of the woman who helped shape the 20th century through her writings. Built in 1857, the house serves as a museum with original family furniture and other personal belongings. Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park is located just south of Hillsboro, and is the site of West Virginia's last significant Civil War battle. There are two access points to The Greenbrier River Trail in Hillsboro. This trail is 78 miles in length and is used for hiking and backpacking, bicycling, cross-country skiing and horseback riding. The Monongahela National Forest covers most of Pocahontas County. The forest is a recreation destination and major tourism attraction, hosting approximately 3 million visitors annually. Other attractions near Hillsboro include Watoga State Park, the Cranberry Glades Botanical Area, Beartown State Park and the Highland Scenic Highway. Hillsboro is also home to the Little Levels Heritage Fair, held the last weekend in June to coincide with the birthday of Pearl S. Buck.

The northeastern panhandle region of West Virginia has a humid continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters. The climate of the eastern panhandle is influenced by its proximity to the Atlantic slope and is similar to that of nearby coastal areas. The yearly average temperature is 53F. Prevailing winds are from the south and west, and seldom reach hurricane or tornado force. Average annual precipitation is 44 inches and is slightly heavier on the western slopes of the Alleghenies. Accumulations of snow may vary from about 20 inches in the western sections to more than 50 inches in the higher mountains. Spring weather is unpredictable and the driest period tends to be during the autumn months of September and October.
