Pipestem
is an unincorporated community in Summers County in southeast West Virginia. The community is also known as Jordans Chapel. The mountainous community of Pipestem sits at an elevation of 2,382 feet along WV Route 20, southwest of the city of Hinton. Pipestem is also the name of a resort park near the community that is known as the "Year-round Crown Jewel of West Virginia State Parks." The 4,050-acre Pipestem State Park provides gorgeous scenic overlooks of the Bluestone Gorge, two lodges, vacation rental cottages, campgrounds, restaurants and conference facilities and fantastic recreational opportunities. The park includes a nature center that is open year-round and features the Harris Homestead, a reconstructed 1900s era historic house museum and barn. Pipestem also features a challenging 9-hole par 3 golf course. Both are complete with rental carts, pro shops, and driving ranges. A resident PGA Golf Pro is available for lessons. Twenty hiking trails are maintained in Pipestem, and other activities include horseback riding, sledding and skiing, paddle boating, canoeing, biking, horseshoes and archery. The highlight at Pipestem, however, is an aerial tramway. The enclosed cars carry you on a six-minute ride along 3600 feet of outstanding scenery to the Bluestone River Gorge below. This facility is operated seasonally, May to October 31.

South Central West Virginia is dominated by a humid continental climate, due to its geographical location in the higher elevations. Summers are very warm and humid and winters are cold and snowy. The humid continental climate is marked by variable weather patterns and a large seasonal temperature variance. Summers are often warm and humid with frequent thunderstorms and winters can be very cold with frequent snowfall and persistent snow cover. The seasonal temperature variance is typically 25-35C (45-63F) and increases as one moves further inland. Places with at least four months of average daily temperatures above 10 C (50 F) and at least one month below 0 C (32 F) or -3 C (26.6 F) depending on source, and which do not meet the criteria for an arid or semiarid climate, are classified as humid continental.
