Flat-Top
is an unincorporated community located in Mercer County in southeast West Virginia. It's located along U.S. Route 19, about 19 miles south of the city of Beckley. Flat Top is also the site of a ski resort. Flat Top Mountain forms the common border between Summers and Mercer counties, to the southeast, and Raleigh and Wyoming counties, to the northeast. Precipitation on the southern face of the mountain drains into the Bluestone River; precipitation to the north drains into the Guyandotte River and by way of Glade Creek and Beaver Creek into New River. As a result of its elevation, the highland around Flat Top Mountain enjoys locally heavy snows in winter and pleasantly cool temperatures in summer. Skiing is a popular sport on the mountain, and many vacation homes are have been located amid its woodland and farmland. Flat Top Lake, a gated community of vacation properties, is located just off the Interstate 77 junction with U.S. 19 near the mountains summit. Also on the mountain, Winterplace Ski Resort, less than two miles from the interstate exit, is among the most accessible skiing areas in the southeastern U.S.

South Central West Virginia is dominated by a humid continental climate, due to its geographical location in the higher elevations. Summers are very warm and humid and winters are cold and snowy. The humid continental climate is marked by variable weather patterns and a large seasonal temperature variance. Summers are often warm and humid with frequent thunderstorms and winters can be very cold with frequent snowfall and persistent snow cover. The seasonal temperature variance is typically 25-35C (45-63F) and increases as one moves further inland. Places with at least four months of average daily temperatures above 10 C (50 F) and at least one month below 0 C (32 F) or -3 C (26.6 F) depending on source, and which do not meet the criteria for an arid or semiarid climate, are classified as humid continental.
