Hinton
is a small city located in Summers County in southeastern West Virginia. As of the 2000 census, it had a population of 2,880 residents. Established in 1873, Hintons complete downtown was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1984. There are several museums in Hinton, including the Veterans Memorial Museum, Wood's Clock Museum, the Hinton Railroad Museum, and Kings Civil War Museum. Tourism is one of Hinton's major industries. Visitors are drawn to the area for the beautiful scenery, down home hospitality and charm, world class fishing, whitewater rafting, and hiking and biking trails. Some of the nearby attractions include Pipestem State Park, Bluestone State Park and the New River Gorge National River. Visitors can enjoy the towns turn-of-the-century architecture via walking tours or driving through the streets of the historic town. Since 1987, community leaders and the National Park Service have been working together to revitalize Hinton as a living historical museum. In addition, Hinton has a number of artists living and working in the area, and the Ritz Theater has recently been remodeled and provides a lovely venue for movies, plays and musical events.

South Central West Virginia is dominated by a humid continental climate, due to its geographical location in the higher elevations. Summers are very warm and humid and winters are cold and snowy. The humid continental climate is marked by variable weather patterns and a large seasonal temperature variance. Summers are often warm and humid with frequent thunderstorms and winters can be very cold with frequent snowfall and persistent snow cover. The seasonal temperature variance is typically 25-35C (45-63F) and increases as one moves further inland. Places with at least four months of average daily temperatures above 10 C (50 F) and at least one month below 0 C (32 F) or -3 C (26.6 F) depending on source, and which do not meet the criteria for an arid or semiarid climate, are classified as humid continental.
