Pence-Springs
is a small, unincorporated village, located in Summers County in southeast West Virginia. It sits along the Greenbrier River, east of the city of Hinton, at an elevation of 1,539 feet above sea level. Once a hot spot for travelers, Pence Springs is now a quiet community, home to a large, well known flea market. There is an actual spring in Pence Springs, and the water that flows from it won awards at the St Louis Expo in 1904. In 1918, the community built a 3-story brick hotel above the spring that attracted many tourists. The hotel was used as a state womens prison through the fifties, sixties and seventies. The old resort is currently being occupied by the Greenbrier Academy for Girls. Throughout the years several other hotels/hostels and boarding homes were built, none of which are no longer in use. Nearby, the historic city of Hinton has a downtown area that is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. There are several museums in Hinton, including the Veterans Memorial Museum, Wood's Clock Museum, the Hinton Railroad Museum, and Kings Civil War Museum. Recreational activities near Pence Springs includes fishing, whitewater rafting, hiking and biking in Pipestem State Park, Bluestone State Park and the New River Gorge National River.

Southern West Virginia , near the Virginia border, has a mild, four-season climate. Within this region, the city of Bluefield prides itself on its hospitable climate. Since 1938 the Bluefield Chamber of Commerce has given free lemonade when the temperature has surpassed 90F. The city's motto is "nature's air conditioned city, where the summer spends the winter." Indeed, due to the high elevation, this region has a somewhat cooler and more moist climate than surrounding areas at lower altitudes. Summers are mild and humid with high temperatures ranging from the 60s to low 70s F. Summer low temperatures average 50-55 F, although temperatures below freezing have been recorded in every month of the year. Winters are typically cold and snowy. Nearly all snow falls from October through April. Severe storms, such as tornadoes, are rare in this region.
