Madison
is a small town located in Boone County in southwestern West Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the population was 2,677 residents. When first established, the town of Madison was named Boone Court House. The town burned during the American Civil War and was then incorporated in 1906 and named for Colonel William Madison Peyton, a pioneer coal operator, who was a leader in the movement which resulted in the formation of Boone County. Madison is billed as the Gateway to the Coalfields. Outdoor activities abound in the area, and include fishing, hiking and bicycling. Golf enthusiasts enjoy the links at the Riverview Country Club, located just outside of Madison and considered among the most immaculate in the state. Boone County is also near a water park that is billed as gWest Virginiafs Water Park.h The facility is located just off Corridor G (U.S. 119), halfway between Charleston and Madison. It features two giant downhill water slides, a junior Olympic size pool, a childrens pool, lazy river, miniature golf, picnic facilities, archery, and go-carts. Boone Countyfs 70-mile section of the Hatfield-McCoy Recreational Trails Authoritys system opened in October, 2002 and is located about 15 miles north of Madison. The trails, known as gThe Little Coal River Trails,h are open sunrise to sunset. @@

Southwestern West Virginia has a humid subtropical climate. Average temperatures are usually warmer than the rest of the state (except the region around Huntington), due to it being west of the higher elevations. Spring temperatures can vary considerably and it's not unusual at this time for a warm, sunny day to be followed by a chilly, rainy day. Summer temperatures can be hot and muggy. Autumn days are usually warm and dry and nights are cool. Winters usually differ from other winters in West Virginia because it's the last place in the state to receive snowfall. Winter temperatures tend to be mild, but an occasional cold snap can see it plummet to below 10F at night. Most snow falls during January and February. It is rare for a major snowstorm to hit this area. Thunderstorms are frequent during the late spring and throughout the summer, and occasionally can be quite violent. Tornadoes are rare. The driest period tends to be during September and October.
