Davis
is a small town located in Tucker County along the Blackwater River in northeastern West Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the population was 624 residents. Davis is known as the highest incorporated town in the state of West Virginia at an elevation of 3,200 feet above sea level. This provides the area with a cool climate year round. The average temperature during the summer months is a pleasant 75 degrees. The town offers a colorful array of fall foliage and an average snowfall of 160 inches per year. During the spring, visitors find the wild Rhododendron and Mountain Laurel in glorious bloom. Davis became a well know and boisterous lumber town in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The plateau area was locally known as Canada and consisted of a dense forest of spruce and hardwoods. US Senator and industrialist, Henry Gassaway Davis (1823-1916) paid between $5.00 and $15.00 an acre for the land, which is now the town of Davis. The town of Davis is located near several popular outdoor recreational attractions. Blackwater State Park and Canaan Valley State Park, as well as Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge are located within ten miles. Davis has become popular for mountain biking, hiking, alpine skiing and snowboarding, whitewater rafting, fishing and wildlife viewing. The area is also filled with unique historical spots from the American Revolution through the Civil War eras.

The northeastern panhandle region of West Virginia has a humid continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters. The climate of the eastern panhandle is influenced by its proximity to the Atlantic slope and is similar to that of nearby coastal areas. The yearly average temperature is 53F. Prevailing winds are from the south and west, and seldom reach hurricane or tornado force. Average annual precipitation is 44 inches and is slightly heavier on the western slopes of the Alleghenies. Accumulations of snow may vary from about 20 inches in the western sections to more than 50 inches in the higher mountains. Spring weather is unpredictable and the driest period tends to be during the autumn months of September and October.
