Charleston
is the capital and largest city in West Virginia. It's located at the confluence of the Elk and Kanawha Rivers in the southwestern portion of the state. As of the 2000 census, the population was 53,421, however the population of the entire metropolitan area is approximately 304,000. Charleston is home to several public parks and is near the Kanawha State Forest, which features camping, hiking trails and picnic areas. Numerous special events take place in Charleston, along the banks of the Kanawha River to the state capitol grounds. The West Virginia Dance Festival, held between April 25 and 30, features dance students from across the state that attend classes and workshops in ballet, jazz and modern dance. At the finale, the students perform in the West Virginia State Theatre; free to the public. Beginning in 1982, Symphony Sunday, which is usually held the first weekend in June, is a full day of music, food, and family fun, culminating in a free performance by the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra and a fireworks display. Other events includes the West Virginia International Film Festival, the Memorial Day Vandalia Gathering and the annual Charleston Sternwheel Regatta. The city is also home to the Charleston Art Walk, typically held the third Thursday of each month. The Walking Tour Guide of Charleston features homes and buildings of the city's historic East End, including an office building that survived a cannonball hit during the 1862 Battle of Charleston. Walking tours of the gold-domed state Capitol and the Governor's Mansion are also available.

Southwestern West Virginia has a humid subtropical climate. Average temperatures are usually warmer than the rest of the state (except the region around Huntington), due to it being west of the higher elevations. Spring temperatures can vary considerably and it's not unusual at this time for a warm, sunny day to be followed by a chilly, rainy day. Summer temperatures can be hot and muggy. Autumn days are usually warm and dry and nights are cool. Winters usually differ from other winters in West Virginia because it's the last place in the state to receive snowfall. Winter temperatures tend to be mild, but an occasional cold snap can see it plummet to below 10F at night. Most snow falls during January and February. It is rare for a major snowstorm to hit this area. Thunderstorms are frequent during the late spring and throughout the summer, and occasionally can be quite violent. Tornadoes are rare. The driest period tends to be during September and October.
