Bluefield
is located in the southern Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia, directly across the Virginia border. As of the 2000 census, the population was 11,451 residents. Bluefield is West Virginia's most elevated city at 2,655 feet above sea level. The town is nicknamed "Nature's Air Conditioned City," because the relatively high elevation keeps summer temperatures moderate. Since 1938, the Chamber of Commerce has given free lemonade whenever the temperature has surpassed 90 degrees F. This thriving city is home to the Mountain Festival, Blue-Gray Horse Show, and College Soccer Tournament. It also boasts nearby ski resorts, white water rafting and ATV mountain trails. Cultural amenities in Bluefield include a dance theater and art galleries with works produced by local artisans. The Bluefield Arts Center also hosts local holiday musicals, classic works and contemporary dramas and comedies through the popular Summit Players Theater. Other attractions in Bluefield include the Crab Orchard Museum and Pioneer Park in nearby Tazewell, the East River Mountain Overlook and the Greater Bluefield Community Center. Pipestem State Park, located minutes from Bluefield, offers golf, horseback riding, hiking and gourmet restaurants. Bluefield is the hometown to one of Americas Nobel Prize winners, Dr. John F. Southern West Virginia , near the Virginia border, has a mild, four-season climate. Within this region, the city of Bluefield prides itself on its hospitable climate. Since 1938 the Bluefield Chamber of Commerce has given free lemonade when the temperature has surpassed 90F. The city's motto is "nature's air conditioned city, where the summer spends the winter." Indeed, due to the high elevation, this region has a somewhat cooler and more moist climate than surrounding areas at lower altitudes. Summers are mild and humid with high temperatures ranging from the 60s to low 70s F. Summer low temperatures average 50-55 F, although temperatures below freezing have been recorded in every month of the year. Winters are typically cold and snowy. Nearly all snow falls from October through April. Severe storms, such as tornadoes, are rare in this region.
