Huntington
is the second largest city in the state of West Virginia. It's located in Cabell and Wayne Counties along the Ohio River in the southwestern portion of the state. The estimated population in 2008 was 49,185 residents. The city of Huntington is home to Marshall University. Incorporated in 1871, the city was originally near the older city of Guyandotte, which later became a neighborhood of Huntington in 1911. Guyandotte was founded in 1799 on land that was originally part of the 28,628-acre French and Indian War Veteran's Savage Grant. The old Federal Era town of Guyandotte has homes dating back to 1820 and a graveyard containing 18th century French and Colonial-era settlers, including surnames such as LeTulle, Holderby, and Buffington. Huntington drew national attention when a chartered jet transporting 75 Marshall University football players, coaches, staff and supporters crashed on November 14, 1970. Everyone on board was killed. A movie titled, "We Are Marshall," starring Matthew McConaughey was released in 2006 and depicts the aftermath of the aviation disaster. Huntington is home to the Central City historic district in downtown, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Huntington is home to eleven city parks and an amusement park is adjacent to the city. Several annual special events take place in the city, including the Guyandotte Civil War Days and Guyandotte Heritage Days in early November, the Huntington Dogwood Arts and Crafts Festival in April and Old Central City Days the third weekend in June.

Southwestern West Virginia , along the Ohio River, has a distinct, four-season climate. Due to the location in one of the westernmost and lowest altitude areas of the state, it has a warmer and milder humid subtropical climate, unlike the hilly uplands of West Virginia in the Allegheny and Appalachian Mountains. This southwestern region is warmed by westerly winds from the Midwest and made humid by the Ohio River, and avoids the bitter cold and high winds of the interior regions of the state. Summers are hot in southwestern West Virginia and winters cold and snowy. Snowfall can occur anytime from late November to mid-April, with the most amounts falling during January and February. Spring tends to be cool and wet, and autumn is mild and dry and pleasant temperatures for viewing colorful fall foliage.
