Buckhannon
is located in Upshur County along the Buckhannon River in north-central West Virginia. It is the only incorporated city and the county seat of Upshur County. As of 2004, the estimated population was 7,500. The city of Buckhannon is home to West Virginia Wesleyan College and is located 115 miles northeast of the capital city of Charleston. The city lies in the beautiful foothills of the Allegheny Mountains and outdoor recreational opportunities abound in the area. It's also home to an annual Strawberry Festival, which is held on the third week of May. Visitors to the festival enjoy free entertainment, arts and crafts, 3 parades and of course, all kinds of exhibits of delicious strawberries. West Virginia Wesleyan College is a regionally liberal arts college with an enrollment of about 1,400 students from 35 US states and 26 countries. It was listed as one of the Best Southeastern Colleges by the Princeton Review in 2005, 2007 and 2009, and a Best-Value College in 2006 and 2007. The North Buckhannon Riverfront Park is the site of a farmer's market and also features a large pavilion, picnic tables, horseshoe pits and playground equipment. Other attractions in the town include West Virginia State Wildlife Center, Jawbone Park and Fidler's Mill.

Northern West Virginia has a four-season climate classified as humid continental. July is the average warmest month, with an average high temperature of 85. The average coolest month is January with an average low temperature of 21. Snowfall can occur anytime from late November to mid-April, with the most amounts falling during January and February. However, it is rare for a major snowstorm to hit this area. Rainfall is spread out fairly evenly over the entire year. Thunderstorms are frequent during the late spring and throughout the summer, and occasionally can be quite violent. Tornadoes are very rare in the state of West Virginia. The driest period tends to be during the autumn months of September and October. Spring is the most unpredictable season. It's not unusual in the springtime for a warm, sunny day to be followed immediately by a chilly, rainy day.
