Summersville
is a town located in central West Virginia's Nicholas County. As of the 2000 census, the town had a population of 3,194. Summersville is surrounded by pristine waters that flow down from the surrounding mountains. It's home to Summersville Lake, which is the largest lake in West Virginia, with 28,000 acres of water and over 60 miles of shoreline. Summersville Lake offers fishing, boating, water-skiing, snorkeling and scuba diving. It serves as the eastern, upstream end of the Gauley River National Recreation Area. Other activities in the area include hiking, biking, picnicking and camping. Rock climbing and whitewater rafting are also available with scheduled whitewater releases below the dam on the world class Gauley River. Adjacent to the lake is a campground with cabins and RV hookups, access to fishing, showers, restrooms, a playground, swimming and picnicking areas. Launch ramps for boats area located at Battle Run, Salmon Run, Long Point Area and the Picnic Area. A marina is located at the Long Point Area and a visitor center is located at the Information Office at the lake. Summersville is also home to an annual Potato Festival and the Carnifex Ferry Battlefield State Park is located nearby. The town of Summersville also has the distinction of being a well known "speed trap" along U.S. Route 19. In 2001, the local police department issued 18,133 tickets.

South-Central West Virginia is dominated by a humid continental climate, due to its geographical location in the higher elevations. Summers are very warm and humid and winters are cold and snowy. The humid continental climate is marked by variable weather patterns and a large seasonal temperature variance. Summers are often warm and humid with frequent thunderstorms and winters can be very cold with frequent snowfall and persistent snow cover. The seasonal temperature variance is typically 25-35C (45-63F) and increases as one moves further inland. Places with at least four months of average daily temperatures above 10C (50F) and at least one month below 0 C (32F) or -3 C (26F) depending on source, and which do not meet the criteria for an arid or semiarid climate, are classified as humid continental.
