Hedgesville is a small town located in Berkeley County in the northeastern panhandle of West Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the population was 240 residents. The Town of Hedgesville was laid out in 1832 along the old Warm Springs Road (now West Virginia Route 9) and named for the prominent local Hedges family. The entire town of Hedgesville is a National Register Historic District. On August 17, 2004, President George W. Bush made a re-election campaign stop and photo-op at Hedgesville High School. This is a highly unusual event for Hedgesville, but can be explained by West Virginias then status as a swing state in the 2004 Election. The Washington Heritage Trail runs through the town of Hedgesville. This scenic Byway allows travelers to follow the footsteps of Americas first president. So much of George Washingtons history is preserved and relived along the Byway that you can almost feel his presence. The Washington Heritage Trail is a loop route, so you can begin and end your tour anywhere along the way. Visit the small towns along the Byway and take advantage of the shops, restaurants, and cultural activities. From the Byway you can see seven of the Washington familys estates. For a first-hand look at the history of the area, take part in any of the live enactments that occur along the Byway. There are a total of 21 National Register Historic Districts and 126 National Register Historic Sites near the Byway, as volunteers and historical groups preserve the legacies that made America great.

South Central Pennsylvania experiences four seasons, although there are variations depending on the area and altitude. Summers tend to be hot and humid, while winters are cold with snow; the mountainous areas are typically cooler in summer, and receive a lot more snow in the wintertime. July is usually the warmest month with temperatures averaging 80°F (27°C), although the southern part of the state is often hotter. The coldest time of year is January. Spring and autumn are the best times to travel, as they are moderate in temperature, with less humidity. Peak tornado season in the eastern U.S. is usually between May and July.
