Berkeley-Springs
is located in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. The town is incorporated as Bath, but is also known by the name of its post office, Berkeley Springs. As of the 2000 census, the population was 663 residents. Berkeley Springs was a popular resort area during the early years of the United States. The mineral springs drew many notable visitors, including George Washington and James Rumsey. Today, tourism continues to be the main industry and four full service mineral springs spas are located in the area. It's also home of the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting, the longest running and largest such event in the world. Berkeley Springs is also a noted arts community. Since 1994, the town has been listed in all four editions of John Villanis 100 Best Art Towns in America. Besides art and the mineral spas, the town offers world class dining, unique shops, a history museum and a vintage movie theater. More than 100 lodging choices are here, including historic inns and elegant bed and breakfasts. Other attractions include the Washington Heritage Trail, a 70-mile self-guided driving tour that includes more than a dozen sites linked to George Washington, such as Paw Paw Tunnel and the George Washington Bathtub. Two nearby state parks offer miles of mountain hiking trails, a lake and golf course, horseback riding and cross-country skiing. If you visit in the autumn, try to catch the Apple Butter Festival, which features a parade, crafts, concerts, and apple butter cooking in kettles while you watch.

South Central Pennsylvania experiences four seasons, although there are variations depending on the area and altitude. Summers tend to be hot and humid, while winters are cold with snow; the mountainous areas are typically cooler in summer, and receive a lot more snow in the wintertime. July is usually the warmest month with temperatures averaging 80°F (27°C), although the southern part of the state is often hotter. The coldest time of year is January. Spring and autumn are the best times to travel, as they are moderate in temperature, with less humidity. Peak tornado season in the eastern U.S. is usually between May and July.
