Lost-River
is an unincorporated community located along West Virginia Route 29 in the northeastern panhandle of the state. Being only two hours from Washington, DC, Lost River has become a popular weekend destination, with many people from the Greater Washington Metropolitan region owning vacation homes there. It is near Lost River State Park. Nestled in the wooded mountains, the park encompasses over 3,700 acres of stunning views and peacefulness. Several miles of hiking trails are in Lost River State Park, plus it gives visitors an unparalleled opportunity for nature study with the abundance of flora and fauna found in the park. One trail leads to Cranny Crow overlook with its commanding views of the park from 3,200 feet. A naturalist is available for visitors to the park, who will assist in activities such as hikes, stream searches, films, slide shows, cookouts, campfires and family fun athletic competitions. The naturalist activities are available Memorial Day through Labor Day. There is also a gift shop in the park that showcases regional artisans and craftspeople, along with food items such as honey, maple syrup, jams and jellies. Picnic shelters are also found throughout the park, and large pavilions are available for family reunions.

Northwest Virginia , near the West Virginia border, has a distinct four-season climate. The mountain at Bryce Resort climbs to 1,750 feet above sea level. As such, it's one of the snowiest regions of the state. Some of the heaviest snowfalls in the United States occur in the Appalachians of West Virginia and the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The climate consists of moderately cold winters and comfortable cool summers. The normal average temperature is 47.6 degrees F., with summer temperatures averaging 70-80 degrees F. The average annual precipitation is 42 inches.
