Fayetteville is a vibrant small town located in Fayette County in south-central West Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the population was 2,754. Called the "Gateway to the New River Gorge," Fayetteville was listed as one of the 2006 "Top 10 Coolest Small Towns in America" by Budget Travel Magazine. The town of Fayetteville was established in 1837 when it became the Fayette County seat. With a heritage that runs deep into the mountains and coal mines and railroad towns of the New River Gorge, and up to the sheer cliffs of the New River Gorge National Park, there's a lot to see and do in Fayetteville. Just a few of the adventures include mountain biking, white water rafting, rock climbing, hiking, fishing, wildlife viewing and bird watching - the list is almost endless. A major attraction is the New River Gorge Bridge. At 3,030 feet in length and a height of 876 feet, it's the highest vehicular bridge in the Americas, and the second-highest in the world. The bridge is the centerpiece of Fayette Countys Bridge Day, during which the bridge is closed to vehicular traffic. The festival includes demonstrations of rappelling, ascending and BASE jumping, and is held every October on the third Saturday. Bungee jumping has been banned from Bridge Day since 1993. Fayetteville's downtown offers a busy shopping district and great restaurants and a lovely town park. With a strong sense of tradition, Fayetteville combines both old and new for a unique Appalachian experience.

South-Central West Virginia is dominated by a humid continental climate, due to its geographical location in the higher elevations. Summers are very warm and humid and winters are cold and snowy. The humid continental climate is marked by variable weather patterns and a large seasonal temperature variance. Summers are often warm and humid with frequent thunderstorms and winters can be very cold with frequent snowfall and persistent snow cover. The seasonal temperature variance is typically 25-35C (45-63F) and increases as one moves further inland.
